Cultural information:  This nameless aquatic plant has rounded to heart shaped leaves as indicated by its last Latin name cordata. Houttunia's 3" leaves are grayish-green in coloration with red margins on the outside edges of the leaf.

Houttuynia can be planted in spring after danger of hard frost has passed. In large ponds Houttuynia may be planted directly in the pond or plant in a pond basket. Submerge no deeper than 4 inches. Remove any dead or dying foliage and flowers as they appear. There's also a hybrid variety called 'Chameleon' that has vividly colored foliage in shades of red to pink, creamy white and gray-green leaves. This colorful variety is also known as 'Tricolor'.
