Pictured Wildflower: Fairy Slipper
Calypso bulbosa
Wildflower Field notes: Fairy Slipper is a very rare wildflower... in fact its endangered. One could look for years and never find this fascinating Orchid. You could imagine our excitement when we found this little gem. The leaves in the picture do not belong to the Fairy Slipper. This plant grows from a bulb and only produces a single round leaf near the ground. Within a week or two of flowering the leaf dried up and the entire plant seemed to vanish.

If you want to try to locate a Calypso bulbosa look on north facing mossy slopes in the pine forest. Fairy Slipper prefers moist, shady areas.
