| "Blue
Lake Stringless Pole Beans" are a Ferry Morse item. This
variety has
tender stringless pods 5" to 5 1/2" long with a mild
flavor. They are high in Vitamin A, B and C.
The Bed: Add a fresh layer
of rich compost to the top soil, then till or spade the bed to
loosen the soil and work in the compost. Rake level.
How to Grow: Pole beans
grow best in fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Do not
pre-soak the seed. Plant seed at the base of a 6 foot pole after
all danger of frost has passed. Plant seed 1" to 2"
deep, spaced 2" - 4" apart placing 6 to 8 seeds in a
circle around the pole. Space poles about 4 feet apart. Keep the
soil moist but not soggy until the seeds germinate. After
germination water as need. Don't use high nitrogen fertilizers on
any type of beans as it will reduce yield.
Harvesting: Pick pole beans
as soon as the pods are 5" in length and the beans inside
are still small. Pods can be left to mature on the vine for shell
beans. To dry Pole beans leave the plant in the ground until it
turns yellow, then pull them and hang in a dry area until the pods
are dry.
Available Hybrids - Cultivars: From
Ferry Morse - Kentucky blue 66 days, and Scarlet Runner (ornamental bean).
