Cultivation:
Viola 'Columbine' is very popular in Europe and may be
difficult to locate. Plant in partial sun to full shade in moist compost rich, well
drained soil in beds or containers. Viola 'Columbine' will adapt to most soil types. Space new
container grown plants 6" - 8" apart. Remove spent
flowers to promote new flower growth. Mulch plants for winter protection.
A great choice for rock gardens.
Propagation:
Seed can be started in a cold frame or greenhouse. Start violas in
early spring, start pansies in January and hold indoors until
early spring. For a quicker showing.... purchase pre-started plant in
packs or pots from your local Garden Center. Once established
plants can be divided in early spring. Many varieties are
self seeding.
