Cultivation: Peonies are a popular easy to grow
perennial that are loved for their large colorful fragrant
flowers. There are literally dozens of varieties of Peony
available in nearly every color of the rainbow. Peonies are
available in bush form or tree forms.
Peonies are slow growing plants that will take 3 to 4
seasons to mature and become well established. Once established they should bloom
sometime in May or June. Spent flowers should be removed.
Peony flowers are excellent for cutting. Brought indoors a fresh
cut bouquet will fill the room with its wonderful fragrance.
Peonies prefer to be planted in full sun in compost rich, well drained soil.
My Peonies receive about a half day of sun and seem to grow
normally producing an abundance of flowers each spring. Peonies are available in four flower types, single
(pictured), semi-double, double and Japanese. Peony roots are
poisonous if ingested.
Propagation: Seed is very slow to germinate, some
times taking over two years. Your best bet is to purchase
pre-started plants at your local Garden Center. Space new
container grown plants a minimum of 24" to 36" apart.
Plant your Peony in a permanent location as they can be a bit
difficult to move or divide.
Potential pests ~ diseases:
Mildews.
