Perennial Cultivation: There are three types of Delphiniums available. The Elatums, the Belladonnas, and Pacific Hybrids. 'Black Knight' is in the Elatum group which are perennial in zone 4 as are the Belladonnas.

The Pacific hybrid group is grown as either annuals or biennials. 'Black Knight' is a large Delphinium that may require staking while flowering especially in windy areas.

Plant Delphinium Black Knight in full sun in compost rich well drained soil. Delphiniums are heavy feeders and should be feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Plants should be replaced every 3 to 4 years as they will become woody and begin to decline with age. Cut plants back after initial flowering for a possible second showing in fall. Delphinium flowers are excellent for cutting. A fantastic choice for high altitude gardens.

Most Delphinium varieties are poisonous.

Propagation:
Delphiniums are a bit difficult to grow from seed. Your best bet is to purchase pre-started Delphinium plants at your local Garden Center. Delphiniums are also difficult to divide or relocate.

Potential pests ~ diseases:
Mildews and slugs.
