Cultivation:
Columbine 'Dove' can grow to 36" in height.
It it is one
of the largest Columbines available producing large pure white
flowers that face upward or outward. Once Columbine Dove begins blooming mid to late spring,
you can expect
an abundance of showy flowers for 4 to 6 weeks. Columbine
Dove was given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal
Horticultural Society in 2003. It is part of the Song Bird series
of Columbine. Plant Aquilegia Dove in full sun to
partial shade in fertile, moist well drained soil. Shelter from
mid day summer heat is beneficial.
Columbine Dove's flowers are excellent for cutting for fresh flower
arrangements. Most varieties of Columbines are profuse self
seeders providing the gardener with a new crop of seedling the
following spring. When young the seedlings are easy to dig and
relocate.
Propagation: This beautiful Columbine can easily be grown from seed.
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost, then transplant
outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Collected seeds grown from hybrid plants my not hold true in form to their parents.
For quicker growth purchase pre-started plants at your local
Garden Center. Space new
container grown plants 20" - 24" apart. Plant Columbines
where you intend to keep them as they are difficult to transplant
once established.
Potential pests ~ diseases: Aphids or powdery mildew.
