Aquilegia 'Cardinal'
Perennial Cultivation: Columbine 'Cardinal' is a beautiful red and whit large flowered perennial variety of Aquilegia. Once the plant begins blooming, expect an abundance of showy flowers for 4 to 6 weeks. Butterflies, Bees, and Hummingbirds are attracted to the red flowers. Their flowers are excellent for cutting, but are short lived once cut.

Plant Columbine Cardinal in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moist well drained soil. Locations with mid day shade from late summer heat is preferred. Most varieties of Columbines are profuse self seeders.

Propagation:
Columbine Cardianl can easily be grown from seed. Seeds collected and grown from hybrid plants my not hold true in form to their parents. 

For faster growth purchase pre-started plants at your local garden shop or greenhouse.. Space new container grown plants 12" - 24" apart. The bed will fill in more quickly at closer spacings. Columbine are difficult to dig and transplant as the plants roots dislike being disturbed once established.

Aphids or powdery mildew.
