Houseplant Cultural information: "Chinese Fan Palms" are a good broad leaved houseplant to use in high light areas where you have a lot of available space, such as atriums, sunrooms, enclosed pool areas, or large living rooms with very bright natural lighting. The stems of Chinese Fan palms have small hook shaped thorns running the length of the stem. As the Chinese Fan palm matures it will develop a woody trunk and eventually develop into a palm tree.

When placed in a sunny location a Chinese Fan palm can drink a lot of water. Check the palm for water two or three times per week until you become familiar with the plants water requirements. On larger plants allow the surface soil to dry about 1" down before watering. Water all the way around the plant until water runs from the drainage holes. Often time the Chinese Fan Palm will take up the excess water in the drip tray within a couple of hours. If not remove the excess water to help prevent root rot.

Chinese Fan palms can be feed monthly with a full strength solution of Peter's Houseplant Special, or feed weekly with a dilute solution with every watering while the plant is actively growing. During the winter if the plant becomes inactive feed bi-monthly.

Chinese Fan palms are usually grown from seed thus making propagation difficult.

Common houseplant pests can include: Spider mites.

Chinese Fan Palms are usually only available in larger containers from 8" pots thru 21" specimen plants.
