Cut Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Iris
fresh. Replace the water every 3rd day with cold water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut 1/4" from
the base of each Dutch Iris stem under water using a sharp
knife with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting to help prevent bacterial growth.
Variety note: The Iris
family is very large containing over 300 varieties of plants.
Most are hybrids producing a single flower per stem. Iris is a short lived
flower, only 3 to 6 days
when cut. To get the longest vase life from your Iris, never allow
the stems to run out of water. Iris is available year round in
light blue, dark blue, dark purple, yellow, and white. They are
considered a medium form flower. Dutch Iris is
usually sold in a 10 stem bunch.
Many varieties of Iris is winter hardy in
Colorado. Rhizomes, bulbs or pre-started plants should be
available at your local Garden Center in the spring.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Dutch Iris with
each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent bacteria
growth and helps to feed the Iris flowers helping to insure a longer vase life.
If you run out of commercial flower preservative you can
make your own fresh cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
