Cut Flower Care: Keep the vase water of your cut Hydrangea
fresh. Replace the water every 3rd day with cold water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut 1/2" from
the base of each Hydrange stem under water using a sharp
knife
with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting to help prevent bacterial growth.
Variety note: The key for
keeping your Hydrangeas as long as possible is to keep them
hydrated. Never allow the stems to run out of water. The flowers
dry well if hung upside down in a warm dark location. Many color shades
of Hydrangea are available year round. The most common colors
include blue, pink, white, green, purple, lavender and Antique
green. Hydrangeas are
usually sold by the stem or in 5 stem bunches.
Some
varieties of Hydrangea are zone 4 hardy... meaning they can be
cultivated in your garden.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Hydrangea
with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent
bacteria growth and feeds the small blossoms of your Hydrangea
helping to insure a longer vase
life.
If you run out of commercial flower preservative you can
make your own fresh cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
