Filler Flower Care: Keep the water in the vase of your Gypsophilia
fresh. Replace the water every 3 days with cold water keeping
the water level near the top of the vase. Re-cut 1/2" from
the base of each Baby's Breath stem under water using a sharp
knife
with each water change. Remove any foliage that may become
submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacterial growth.
Variety note: Baby's
Breath is available in either pink or white varieties.
Perhaps the most popular variety is called Million Stars. Two other
varieties can also be commonly found New Love and Party Time, both
having larger white flowers.
Gypsophila is
primarily used as a filler flower to accent greens and fill voids
between flowers. Baby's Breath makes a very nice dried flower
that can be used to decorate any thing from wreaths to craft
projects. Dryed Gyp may need to be sprayed with a fixative. Gypsophila bunches are
generally sold by weight as opposed to stem
count.
There are a several varieties of Gypsophila that are winter hardy to zone
4,
which enables it to be grown
outdoors here in Colorado.
Add a commercial floral preservative such as AquaPlus or
FloraLife to the vase that contains your Gypsophila
with each water change. Floral preservative helps to prevent
bacteria growth and feeds your Baby's Breath insuring a longer vase
life.
If you run out of commercial flower preservative you can
make your own fresh cut flower food mix 1/2 teaspoon of table sugar to a
quart of cold water... mixing thoroughly.
