| Cultivation:
Today there are many hybrid cultivars of Canna available with
colorful foliage and vivid flowers. 'President' has
scarlet flowers with glossy blue-green foliage.
Plant Canna Lilies in full sun to
partial shade in fertile well drained soil, either in beds or containers. They prefer their soil
to be moist... but not continually soggy. Canna will not tolerate
alkaline soils. If
grown in containers Canna can be moved indoors before first frost
to a sun room, greenhouse or sunny window and held over for the
next season. Remove spent flower stems
to promote new flower growth. Varieties such as the Canna
glauca cultivars can be grown in a pond.
Canna tubers can be dug and stored
for re-planting the following spring. After the first hard frost
kills the foliage, remove the stems and leaves... then dig the
tubers, remove any excess soil that clings to the roots and store them in
damp (not wet) peat moss in a cool, dark... frost free area.
Potential pests ~ diseases: Slugs or spider mites.
